Luke 15:17-18 But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.
In utter despair, the lost son remembered the most important thing. Even when he had treated his father shamefully and dishonored him and his entire family; even when he had completely trashed his life through sinful living, throwing away everything he had been given… He remembered something. He remembered that he was still a son! He still had a father (“I will arise and go to my father”). He trusted his father’s kindness enough to go home after all he’d done. He didn’t expect his father to lavish forgiveness on him the way he actually did, but he knew his father’s character enough to think he at least wouldn’t get completely turned away.
Christian, no matter where you are, no matter how long you’ve been there, no matter what you’ve done. Repent. Turn away from your sin. Come home! Leave the muck and the filth behind. You have a perfect, kind, loving Father ready to welcome you home and a perfect Big Brother who has died in your place for your sins to secure your position in His family. Come home!
